What it measures

This dimension describes forward preparation. Toward the higher end, people map out steps, check details and prepare for what could go wrong before they start. Toward the lower end, people start with a rough idea and work out the details along the way.

It is about how much you plan, not how hard you work or how reliable you are. A light planner can be very dependable, and a heavy planner can still enjoy surprises.

The two ends of the scale

Lower scores (toward 0)Flexible

Toward 0, people tend to start with a sketch and fill it in as they go. They often feel that too much planning wastes effort on things that will change anyway.

Higher scores (toward 100)Methodical

Toward 100, people tend to prepare in detail: schedules, lists and backup options. They often feel calmer once the steps are clear and the likely problems are covered.

Around the middle

In the middle range, people tend to plan the parts that matter most and leave the rest open. They might book the essentials of a trip in advance and decide everything else day by day.

In everyday life

  1. Getting ready for a week-long trip.

    Flexible
Books a flight and a place to stay, then works out the rest on arrival.
    Methodical
Prepares a day-by-day itinerary with reservations and a plan for rainy days.
  2. Studying for a test a month away.

    Flexible
Studies when it feels right and picks up the pace as the date gets closer.
    Methodical
Sets out a weekly schedule early and checks progress against it.
  3. Managing monthly spending.

    Flexible
Keeps a rough sense of what is going out and adjusts when needed.
    Methodical
Tracks spending by category and plans larger purchases months ahead.

What it is not

  1. Planning intensity is not the same as diligence. It measures how much you prepare in advance, not how much effort you put in.
  2. It differs from structure preference. Structure preference is about wanting things settled; planning intensity is about preparing in detail. Someone can plan thoroughly and still keep the final decision open.
  3. A low score is not carelessness. Working out details on the go can be an efficient way to handle situations that keep changing.

Together with other dimensions

  • Structure Preference

High planning intensity with a high judging score tends to look like detailed plans fixed early. High planning intensity with a lower judging score may look like thorough research that keeps several options open until late.

  • Risk Tolerance

Planning intensity changes how risk-taking looks. Someone bold and methodical tends to take big chances after careful preparation, while someone bold and flexible tends to jump in and adjust on the way.

  • Adaptability

How comfortable you are when plans change or things are disrupted.

  • Decision Confidence

How firmly you stand by a decision once it’s made, without second-guessing.

  • Curiosity

Your inner drive to explore new ideas and topics.
