What it measures
This dimension is about impact: how much feelings move you and how long they stay. Toward the higher end, people feel joy, disappointment and tension in the room intensely, and those feelings linger. Toward the lower end, people stay on an even keel and let emotional moments pass without being carried away.
It does not measure how well you read or care for others. It describes how strongly emotions land, which brings richness at one end and steadiness at the other.
The two ends of the scale
Lower scores (toward 0)Steady
Toward 0, people tend to stay calm when emotions run high around them and recover quickly from setbacks. Others may experience them as a stable presence in a stressful moment.
Higher scores (toward 100)Attuned
Toward 100, people tend to feel emotions vividly and are strongly affected by the moods of people around them. Music, films and conversations can move them deeply, and difficult moments may take longer to settle.
Around the middle
In the middle range, people tend to feel things clearly without being swept along. Certain topics or relationships may move them strongly, while day-to-day ups and downs pass more lightly.
In everyday life
A friend cancels plans at the last minute.
- Steady
- Shrugs it off and finds something else to do with the evening.
- Attuned
- Feels the disappointment strongly and may still be thinking about it later that night.
Receiving critical feedback on your work.
- Steady
- Notes the points and moves on fairly quickly.
- Attuned
- Feels the criticism for a while, then often thinks it through carefully before responding.
A tense atmosphere at a family dinner.
- Steady
- Stays relaxed and can still enjoy the meal.
- Attuned
- Feels the tension almost physically and may carry it home afterwards.
What it is not
- It is not the same as empathy or skill at reading feelings. Someone with a low score can be very perceptive and kind. A high score means being strongly affected, which is different from understanding accurately.
- A low score does not mean cold. Steady people care too; emotions simply move them less.
- A high score is not fragility, and this dimension says nothing about mental health. It describes a style of emotional response, not a condition.
Together with other dimensions
Decision Style
Emotional sensitivity is measured separately from decision style. Someone can score high here and still decide by principle and evidence, feeling the weight of a decision without letting the feeling make it.
Conflict Style
High emotional sensitivity with a direct conflict style can describe someone who raises problems plainly but feels the friction strongly afterwards. With a diplomatic style, the same sensitivity may make keeping the peace feel especially important.
